They were built roughly years ago. By Karl S. Note the word, ‘roughly’. Until now, we dated the pyramids by working out how long each individual Egyptian Pharaoh held power, and then added all the years, and worked our way backwards. But now Kate Spence, an Egyptologist from the Faculty of Oriental Studies from the University of Cambridge, has come up with another way to date the pyramids. The pyramids were built as tombs for the pharaohs. Even Pharaohs who reigned for only a few years started building their own tombs. So Dr. Spence assumed that by the second year of their reign, each pharaoh would have chosen a suitable location, and then started levelling and preparing the site. The Ancient Egyptians managed to line up the sides of their pyramids to the points of the compass, with extraordinary accuracy.
The mystery of how, exactly, the pyramids were built may have come a step closer to being unravelled after a team of archaeologists made a chance discovery in an ancient Egyptian quarry. Scientists researching ancient inscriptions happened upon a ramp with stairways and a series of what they believe to be postholes, which suggest that the job of hauling into place the huge blocks of stone used to build the monuments may have been completed more quickly than previously thought.
While the theory that the ancient Egyptians used ramps to move the stones has already been put forward, the structure found by the Anglo-French team, which dated from about the period that the Great Pyramid of Giza was built, is significantly steeper than was previously supposed possible.

CNN — Archaeologists working near the pyramids of Giza have discovered an ancient Egyptian burial ground dating back to around BCE and hosting the tombs of high-ranking officials. The remarkable find includes a limestone family tomb from Egypt’s fifth dynasty, a period spanning the 25th to the 24th century BCE, the country’s Ministry of Antiquities said while unveiling the site. The tomb contains the mummies of two people: Behnui-Ka, who held seven titles during the period, including priest and judge; and Nwi, also known as the “chief of the great state” and the “purifier” of the pharaoh Khafre.
Khafre, who built the second of the three famous pyramids of Giza, is believed to have reigned for around 25 years. Archaeologists also found various artifacts elsewhere in the tomb, officials said, including a limestone statue of one of the men, his wife and their son.

A tomb dating back around 4, years, to the age when pyramids were built in Egypt, has been recorded in full color. One of the most remarkable images the researchers published is this embrace between the priestess Meretites at right and her husband Kahai at left , a singer in the pharaoh’s palace. The tomb was built for them and their children. Very few examples of this face-to-face embrace survive from Egypt’s Pyramid Age, and researchers say that it signifies a very special closeness between the two.
A general view of the tomb looking south is shown here. While it is not a particularly large structure much of the original artwork has survived with its color intact, giving researchers a glimpse into the life of a family from the Age of the Pyramids.

A double tomb dating back to the fifth dynasty uncovered at Pyramids of Giza BY. The newly uncovered tomb was discovered by Egyptian archaeological mission, headed by the General Secretary of the Supreme Council of Antiquities Mostafa Waziri. Anany added during a press conference that was held to announce the details of this great discovery that the tomb was reused during the times of the 26th dynasty. Waziri explained that the excavation work started in August and cubic meters of sands were removed to reach to the tomb which is part of an ancient dynasty cemetery.
He added that the unearthed tomb is located in the south-eastern part of the pyramids area. The press conference was attended by renowned archaeologist Zahi Hawass. Hawass further added that Egypt contains a large number of discoveries that are not yet revealed, pointing out that what was already discovered is only 30 percent.
The mission discovered inside the tombs some closed coffins, along with a number of archaeological finds belong to the priests. It is worth mentioning that Egypt Today exclusively revealed on May 3 details about this discovery. Official sources exclusively told Egypt Today that the newly discovered tomb dates back to the fifth dynasty in the Old Kingdom and contains inscriptions in a good condition.
It is worth mentioning that the Egyptian Minister of Antiquities Khaled Anany perambulated a unique tomb located in Saqqara area on April The tomb belongs to a man named Khuwy who was one of the nobles living in the era of the fifth dynasty in the Old Kingdom. Khuwy tomb was discovered by Egyptian mission headed by professor Mohamed Megahed. The mission uncovered this tomb while documenting the collection of pyramids that belong to King Djedkare Isesi who was the eighth and penultimate ruler of the Fifth Dynasty of Egypt in the late 25th century to midth century BC, during the Old Kingdom.

Its many achievements, preserved in its art and monuments, hold a fascination that continues to grow as archaeological finds expose its secrets. For subsequent history through the contemporary period, see Egypt. Ancient Egypt can be thought of as an oasis in the desert of northeastern Africa, dependent on the annual inundation of the Nile River to support its agricultural population.

Great Pyramid: how my research on ancient Egyptian poetry led to an a well-preserved haulage ramp dating to the time of the Great Pyramid.
There are people coming from a New Age perspective who want the pyramids to be very old, much older than Egyptologists are willing to agree. There are people who want them to be built by extraterrestrials, or inspired by extraterrestrials, or built by a lost civilization whose records are otherwise unknown to us. And similar ideas are said about the Sphinx. And in response to the evidence that we have for the time in which the pyramids are built, the criticism is often leveled at scholars that they’re only dealing with circumstantial information.
It’s all just circumstantial. And sometimes we smile at that, because virtually all information in archaeology is circumstantial. Rarely do we have people from thousands of years ago who are writing, who are signing confessions. So there’s no one easy way that we know what the date of the pyramids happens to be. It’s mostly by context. The pyramids are surrounded by cemeteries of other tombs. In these tombs we find bodies. Sometimes we find organic materials, like fragments of reed, and wood, wooden coffins.

He wishes to thank the Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities for their support and permission to undertake this work. What began as an expedition to record the inscriptions of ancient Egyptian quarry workers produced a remarkable discovery about the Great Pyramid at Giza. My colleagues and I in the Anglo-French joint archaeological mission to the ancient quarry site of Hatnub recently revealed the existence of a well-preserved haulage ramp dating to the time of the Great Pyramid, roughly 4, years ago.
We think this could significantly change the theories about how the workers who built the monument were able to transport such large blocks of stone to great heights. It could even provide evidence that pulleys were invented hundreds of years earlier than previously documented. The rock-cut ramp is flanked by two flights of rock-cut stairs, into which are cut post holes that would originally have held wooden posts, now long perished.
The pattern of post holes is well enough preserved that we can begin to reconstruct a pulley system that would have been used to lift large blocks of alabaster out of the open-cast quarry. While some quarrymen would have been stationed above the blocks, hauling them upwards directly, others would have stood below the blocks, pulling downwards.

Memphis is located in the center of the floodplain of the western side of the Nile. Its fame comes from its being the first Capital of Ancient Egypt. The unrivaled geographic location of Memphis, both commanding the entrance to the Delta while being at the confluence of important trade routes, means that there was no possible alternative capital for any ruler with serious ambition to govern both Upper and Lower Egypt.
Traditionally believed to have been founded in BC as the capital of a politically unified Egypt, Memphis served as the effective administrative capital of the country during the Old Kingdom, then during at least part of the Middle and New Kingdoms besides Itjtawy and Thebes , the Late Period and again in the Ptolemaic Period along with the city of Alexandria , until it was eclipsed by the foundation of the Islamic garrison city of Fustat on the Nile and its later development, Al Qahira.
